Lower profile tires do indeed give you less of a cushion when it comes to potholes and the like. If you have a well-made wheel and properly inflated tires, you usually wont have problems unless you are unlucky enough to hit a really bad one. I've had the "pleasure" of hitting a nasty one in LA (some of our roads suck) that bent one of my wheels ($50 fix). I had another one came from a shoddy road repair job and the city paid for it after I documented/photographed it all.
